Smokin' Bean Testimonial: California Cross Service Station
California Cross Service Station started their coffee to go journey back in 2008. Their bean to cup offering had a strong demand from the beginning, selling over 30 cups a day. As their cup sales were high, particularly at peak times of the day like breakfast, they installed a second machine in 2017. This saw their average cup sales rise to 70 cups a day.
In 2019, they decided to upgrade to Smokin’ Bean, featuring a double unit with an add-on food and treats display. With a new sustainable approach and coffee taste profile, this introduced an opportunity to expand their audience and attract more customers.

Store Manager Phil explains “our new customers were intrigued by the new contemporary coffee in store compared to other competitors”. Their customers loved it, and the data proves it! Phil states “year on year the store has experienced an increase in cup sales, now with a daily average of over 90 cups!” They have even been known to sell into triple figures on some days.
California Cross take food to go seriously, and coffee is a key driver within food to go. They stock a wide range of Country Choice hot and ambient food products that go hand in hand with coffee. “The mornings are the busiest period for food to go. Giving customers choice and options throughout the day increases total spend. With Smokin Bean’, customers can add a free shot of flavoured syrup, which has proved very popular. Some of their customers’ favourite flavours are honeycomb, cinnamon and salted caramel. “A lot of our customers choose to have a flavoured coffee. It’s a big plus to increase cup sales” Phil says.
