Cold brew. It’s one of the biggest trending coffee items at the moment. We’ve got a simple recipe which can easily be adapted to make lots of different variations. Cold brew needn’t be complicated – the hardest part is waiting for the magic to happen. Check out our top cold brew recipes that will win you over about how cool cold brew actually is.
First things first:
Basic Cold Brew recipe
There are lots of different variations of cold brew but this the classic recipe we use and adapt it from there.
You will need;
- 50g ground coffee (use coarsely ground for cafetières)
- Ice
- Sparkling water or still water to dilute
Put 400ml cold water into a large jug (filtered water is best) or cafetiere and add the coffee grounds, but do not stir the mixture. Cover and leave to steep for 24hrs. After the time has elapsed, gently stir the mixture then pour it through a sieve lined with coffee filter paper (or a sheet of kitchen paper) into another large jug. This is concentrated cold brew. It will keep in the fridge for 2-3 days. You can even pour into a ice cub tray and freeze. Then just take them out as and when you feel like it.
To serve, dilute 1 part cold brew with 2 filtered or sparkling water (or to your taste) and serve with lots of ice.
Apple & Cinnamon cold brew
What a classic combination and it works perfectly with coffee.
You will need:
- 2 Apples (I like to use a granny smith)
- 1 -2tsp of cinnamon (depending on punchy how much you like it)
- 1 Cinnamon stick
- A splash of apple juice (optional)
- Filtered water
Brew your coffee as above but add one apple (cut into small slices) and the ground cinnamon before you steep for 24 hours. Once steeped and ready to serve, fill a glass a third of the way with cold brew. Add a cinnamon stick and a few slices of apple. Top of with filtered water, I like to add a splash of apple juice for sweetness too.
This is so delicious!
Next in the line up
Mint & Raspberry Cold brew
This is so refreshing, great for mixing up your morning coffee when it’s hot.
You will need;
- A couple of sprigs of mint
- A handful of raspberries
- Sparkling water
Make your cold brew using our cold brew recipe, adding a few raspberries and mint before you steep. After 24 hours, remove the coffee grounds, mint and raspberry so you are left with your cold brew concentrate. Fill your glass a third of the way with the concentrate. Dilute using sparkling water and adding a few raspberries, mint leaves and ice to serve.
Ginger Cold brew
This fiery little number is great for when its a little cooler, as that warming ginger comes through. You can adjust the spice levels by adding less fresh ginger or none at all.
To make this you’ll need:
- Fresh Ginger
- Ginger beer
- 1 Orange
- Ice
Brew your cold brew as above, adding a few pieces of fresh ginger. Once brewed, pour the cold brew concentrate into a glass to a third of the way and top with ginger beer. I like to add a squeeze of orange too and a little zest for a little citrus. Add a few ice cubes to serve.
Lemonade Iced Cold Brew
It’s hot, the sun is shining and you can’t decide between that iced coffee or cooling lemonade – don’t worry we have combined the two! This is a great thirst quencher.
You will need;
• Sugar syrup (you can make this by boiling 100g of sugar in 100ml of water until sugar is dissolved)
• Lemon
• Mint leaves
• Ice
• Sparkling Water
Fill your glass a third of a way with cold brew concentrate. Add the juice of a lemon and some zest. The add two tablespoons of sugar syrup and give a really good stir. Add a few mint leaves some ice and top of with sparkling water.
Coffee Liquor Cold Brew
Ok, we had to add a little cold brew cocktail somewhere right? Who doesn’t love a cocktail in summer? Be warned though, this isn’t for the faint hearted.
To make this you’ll need:
• Condensed milk
• Coffee Liquor (we used Khalua)
• Ice
Fill your glass a third of the way with cold brew concentrate. Now add condensed milk two thirds of the way. Add a shot (or two) of Coffee Liquor and mix. Now add a couple of ice cubes and enjoy!
